Health Careers Programming
REACT RI REACT RI is a Youth Health Service Corps program that introduces high school-age students, 13 to 18 to health careers. The program began in the summer of 2006 with our summer youth career exploration program, and served 25 students from area high schools. The students were paid a weekly stipend to work in job "sampling" sites, which included Rhode Island Hospital (and Samuels Dental Clinic), Hasbro Hospital, Memorial Hospital, St Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care, and Chad Brown Health Center. These sampling positions allowed students to explore the health care field in medical settings. Additionally, the students participated in trainings, where they learned such skills as the use of medical equipment (such as blood glucose meters, blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes), oral health and nutrition basics, and CPR skills, in which they were certified. REACT kicked off its second year in June of 2007 with 31 new students. These students enjoyed placements in sampling sites such as Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Hospital, Miriam Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Comprehensive Community Action Program in both Cranston and Warwick, and Charlesgate Nursing Center. They learned medical skills, were CPR/AED certified, and even had the chance to complete some of their training at the Rhode Island College nursing lab! In addition to the new group of students, fourteen students returned to the program from the previous summer. These students also worked in sampling positions, and began work on service learning projects in the areas of teen pregnancy, physical fitness, the dangers of fast food, sexually transmitted disease/infection, body image/eating disorders, and cutting/self-injury. We are pleased to announce that REACT is now a year round program. During the school year, students can participate in Youth Health Service Corps curriculum and volunteer opportunities. In the summer, we offer a selective and highy competitive summer work program for 14-15 year old students. Health Careers Fair In the fall of 2008, criAHEC will be holding a health career fair for high school and GED students to learn more about the opportunities that the health care field offers. There will be guest speakers, potential employers, and more! Please check back for updates.” To learn more see informational presentation below: To learn more about criAHEC’s health career programs, please contact: Beth Lamarre To apply for REACT please visit www.reactri.org To see more about the REACT program’s activities, please visit our MySpace page at www.myspace.com/reactri.
